｢基礎演習II｣にて、学生と共に、明治維新の英国の外交官であったアーネスト･サトウによる140年前の英語の論文の翻訳を試みた。論文は、16世紀後半の戦国時代の山口の豪族とフランシスコ･サビエルを初めとするキリスト教の宣教師達との交流と盛衰について書かれたものである。且つ、その解釈を通し、絵入りの人物相関図の作成を行った。これらの活動より、学生達は、日本でのキリスト教布教に山口が重要な役割を果たしていたこと、そして、山口が世界とつながっていたことがわかった。また、山口への関心が深まり、さまざまな物事を山口に結び付けて考えるようになった。さらに、今後、気づいていない山口の価値を見出そうと思うようになった。即ち、活動が山口の価値を発見する姿勢を養う過程となったことがわかった。
The purpose of this report is to rediscover the connection between the Yamaguchi region and the history of the world through the activities of "Basic Studies Seminar II". We attempted to translate English papers written 140 years ago by Ernest Satow who was a British diplomat in the Meiji Restoration. The papers concerned the rise and fall of exchanges between Christian missionaries such as Francisco Xavier and the Yamaguchi clans of the Sengoku period in the latter half of the 16th century. Furthermore, through this interpretation, we made the a people correlation diagram with pictures. Through this research, we discovered that Yamaguchi played an important role in the propagation of Christianity in Japan at the time and that Yamaguchi was connected with the world. We became more interest and began to think about the connection of various things to Yamaguchi. Furthermore, we became interested in finding out more in the future about the undiscovered value of Yamaguchi.
