The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of reading circles used in first year English classes at Yamaguchi Prefectural University. Research data was gathered by having students answer a questionnaire in Japanese relating to their feelings concerning reading circles. The results of the survey and conclusions drawn are reported in this paper. This study shows that students generally responded to the reading circles positively, and that reading circles were therefore an effective method for getting students to communicate with each other in English while fostering tolerant attitudes beneficial to intercultural understanding.
