本稿では、周防国（現在の山口県の東半分）の古代地名について、とくに吉敷郡（現在の山口市＋宇部市の一部）の事例を中心に、想定所在地や名称の由来などについて検討する。近世以来の先行研究のなかには、論点が十分に突き詰められていないものや、結論に再検討を要するものも少なくない現状を踏まえ、関連分野における最新の研究成果に依拠した分析を進めていく。
This article analyzes the origins and locations of ancient local names in Suo Province, eastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture, with a special attention to Yoshiki district, a part of Yamaguchi city and Ube city. Studies on this theme started in the beginning of modern times. Some works in the past do not sort out issues and others are not to the point. In this essay I executes the research based on new theories woth a view to overcoming the problems of previous studies.
