Through the comparison of how different metalingual expressions appear and the conciousness of their use in oral research presentations by Japanese and foreign students, this paper reports that Japanese use more speech-style metalingual expressions in making oral presentations than foreign students. Even if foreign students find the nesessity for clarifying expressions and the use of formulated expressions in Japanese for oral research presentations, the expressions familiar to them are limited, while those used by Japanese are various and abundant. From these results, the needs for making syllabus of the metalingual expressions for oral research presentations including a list of useful expressions and their functions are recognized.
