The TempestはWilliam Shakespeareが単独で書き上げた最後の作品で、若い二人の結婚と和解によって幕を閉じる喜劇である。しかし、主人公Prospero が裏切者たちへの復讐を断念し、魔術を放棄する理由は明らかにされていない。本稿では本作における神の不在に注目し、Act to Restrain Abuses of Players の影響について考察を行う。そしてChristopher MarloweのDr Faustusとの比較を通して、Prosperoが魔術を放棄することの重要性とエピローグで観客に祈りをリクエストする意味について論じる。
