The purpose of this study is to clarify the process, unique to modernity, by which sanctity has been conferred on children. Based on the hypothesis that the popularity of Billiken in the early 20th century was supported by the behavior of people who conferred sanctity on children, I analyzed the educational practices of Makoto Kondo for clues and ascertained that two different rituals were performed on children.Dilemmas concerning the education of children in the modern era were found to be analogous to two contradictory rituals for sacred things. This indicates that those rituals were the driving force that drove people to focus on the sanctity of children.
