The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between 1) the past, present, and future recalls, 2) positive/negative emotions, and 3) mental health, using a questionnaire survey among communitydwelling elderly people. 516 people were analyzed, 244 were male (47%) and 272 were female (53%). The age range is between 60 and 69 years, 82 men and 106 women (188 people, 35% of the total), 70 to 79 years of age
138 men and 143 women (281 people, 54% of the total). There were 45 people (9% of the total) in the 80-89 age group, 23 men and 22 women, and over 90 years old there were 1 man and 1 woman (0.3% of the total). As for the contents of recall, in the past, there were many “work” and “war” recalls, followed by “hobbies”, “childhood”, “friends”, “school days” . The emotions at the time of recall had a positive aspect that there were few “anxiety” and “head confused”, and there were many “pleasant” and “enrichment”. On the other hand, there were also many “frightening” and “angry”. With regard to the present recall, there were many recalls of “their own health” and “hobby”, followed by “grandchild”, “old age”, “children”. Regarding the emotions at the time of recall about the present, there were few “bullies”, many “relieved”, there were mixed positive and negative emotions. Regarding future recalls, there were many recalls of “their own health” and “retirement”, followed by “grandchildren”, “death”, “children”, “the world and the society”. Regarding the feelings at the time of recall about the future, there were few “fun”, “enrichment”, “miserable”, “angry”, “lively”, and many “anxiety” and “confused head”.The emotions when recalling the past, present, and future were classified into positive emotions (positive type), positive / negative emotions (mixed type), and negative emotions (negative type). Based on this classification, mental health was compared for PGC moral scale and GDS scale scores. As a result, those who had positive feelings through the past, present, and future had higher subjective well-being than those who had negative feelings through the past, present, and future.
