Morphological characteristics of hemocytes from Coenobitidae (Paguroidea, Anomura, Decapoda, Crustacea) were examined by light microscopy. Two types of hemocytes (granulocytes) were observed in each Coenobitidae, but the composition of hemocytes were different between coconut crab Birgus latro and land hermit crabs (Coenobita cavipes, C. purpureus, C. rugosus, C. violascens). Each Coenobita had chromophobic granulocyte and eosinophilic granulocyte. This composition (group IV) were similar to that of Caridea (Caridina, Macrobrachium, Palaemon, Alpheus) and Stenopodidea (Stesnopus), but differed from other anomuras such as Paguridae (Paguroidea; Pagurus, Spiropagurus; group II) and Lithodidae (Lithodoidea; Paralithodes; group II). On the other hand, Birgus had
basophilic and eosinophilic granulocyte and eosinophilic granulocyte. This composition (new group, VI) is the first record in polyhemocytic crustaceans.
