Changes in the ventilation volume and the amount of oxygen uptake associated with feeding Chaetoceros gracilis were examined in the Purplish bifurcate mussel Septifer virgatus. At a density of 26,000 cells/ml, the ventilation volume rose from 1.56 l/min/kgWW in non-feeding to 8.18 l/min/kgWW (5.2-fold increase in the volume). The amount of oxygen uptake increased from 0.527 ml/min/kgWW in non-feeding to 0.742 ml/min/kgWW (1.4-fold increase in the amount). The oxygen utilization decreased from 5.23 % in non-feeding to 1.58 %. The ventilation volume showed a maximum at about 1 hr later from the start of feeding, and the maximum level maintained for 8 hours or more.
