キェルケゴールは、『哲学的断片』の中で、信仰は神によって与えられるものであると述べている。では、信仰することにおいて人間の側の働きはまったく必要ない、ということになるのだろう、か。このような理解は、「実存主義者」キェルケゴールにはまったく似つかわしくないように思われる。おそらくキェルケゴールの言わんとすることはそのようなことではないだろう。キェルケゴールは、キリスト教を二っの矛盾によって規定している。「神人の逆説」と、「永遠の浄福がある歴史的なものとの関係によって基礎づけられるという弁証法的矛盾」である。前者の規定が、信仰の「与えられる」側面を指示しているのに対して、後者の矛盾、規定が、人間自身の働きを意味していると考えられるのである。そしてそれは、具体的には、与えられた信仰を持続しようとすることを意味する。だがこれは、文字通り、矛盾である。そこには救いの確信は存在せず、ただ疑惑の連続があるにすぎないからである。信仰者は、救いを求めて、信仰を持続することはできないのである。これは、確かに、われわれの一般的な信仰観からは懸け離れたものであると言えよう。われわれの一般的な信仰者のイメージは、確信と安息に満ちたものだからである。しかし、キェルケゴールが標的としたのは、まさにそうした信仰観だったのである。 : In Philosophical Fragments Kierkegaard says faith is given by God. Then, is any action on the side of human beings unnecessary in having faith? But this interpretation can't be suitable for Kierkegaard as an existentialist. Certainly what Kierkegaard means is not like that. Kierkegaard determinates Christianity by two contradictions : the paradox of God-Man and the dialectical contradiction that an eternal happiness is based on the relation to something historical. The former determination is considered to be referring to the givenness aspect of faith and the latter to the action of human beings. Concretely the latter determination means the attempt to maintain the faith given by God. But it is literally a contradiction. There is no conviction of salvation, but only succession of doubt. Therefore believers can't maintain faith in pursuit of salvation. This is perhaps far from our ordinary view of faith. According to our ordinary view, believers are full of conviction and have rest in faith. But the target of Kierkegaard's criticism is exactly such a view of faith.
