This paper explores how discourse is constructed and how discoursal relationsare expressed in English and Japanese: by giving the examples of discoursemarkers now and and. In some cases, now and and are not translated into orexpressed in Japanese. Japanese is a high-context-dependent language, in otherwords, context or unexpressed information shared by writers and speakers playesa more significant role in Japanese than in English. This can cause the differences in discourse construction in English and Japanese.
