The facsimile edition of The Book of Kells produced by Facsimile Verlag,Lucerne,Switzerland in 1990 has been owned by the library of Baiko Gakuin University.The writer of this paper has been writing the papers on the significance of The Book of Kells with reference to Irish literature referring to the facsimile edition and the accompanying volume of commentary which lie ready to hand.This paper traces back the whole life of St.Columcille(St.Columba in Latin)from his birth in Donegal,Ireland,in 521,his missions grown out of his foundation of two monasteries at Kells in Ireland and the island of Iona in Scotland to his death at the island in 597,and discusses mainly the significance of the roles he played as the founder of Celtic monasticism including the accounts of The Book of Kells which in the middle ages was revered at Kells as the great gospel book of Columcille.In addition,St.Columcille's Monastery &Church and Grounds are presented and illustrated together with the photographs taken by the writer himself in addition to a road map.
