French Biblical Hebrew Foreground Background Translation
Abstract: This paper describes characteristics of verbs in Biblical Hebrew narratives and its French translation by
referring to Weinrich's framework, foreground and background in narratives. Weinrich's framework is too simplified to
analyse narratives because foreground itself in a narrative is not so much monolith as multilayered. But by compareing
Biblical Hebrew and French, it turned out that French distinguishes clearly the difference between reality and non reality
by tense and aspect, but on the other hand, Biblical Hebrew doesn't. At the same time, it is necessary to adjust
Weinrich's frame work in order to analyse Biblical Hebrew, whose tense and aspect system is very different from French,
which Weinrich analysed to develop the framework.
