ln 1866, the Choshu Clan, daimyo domain, enter into war against the Tokugawa Shogunate. As a result, this showed the sign which the Shogunate's absolute power was declining. For example, the Matsuyama Clan, which supported the Tokugawa Shogunate, sent its forces to fight against Oshima, the eastern part of the Choshu Clan. But since the Choshu Clan won the battle, declaring the justice of the actions to other Clans, the Matsuyama Clan was forced to apologize to the Choshu Clan after the war. That is,by the victory of the war the Choshu Clan succeeded in keeping down the Tokugawa Shogunatet's powers over feudal lords all over the country. When Tokugawa Yoshinobu assumed the last Shogun, the Matsuyama Clan began to have a hostile attitude toward the Choshu Clan again. It showed that the authority of the Tokugwa Shogunate could be regained by Tokugawa Yoshinobu.
