English teaching has been dramatically changed ater the introduction of ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) and oral communication lessons at high schools in 1990s. We would like to reveal what feelings, motivation, consciousness, and attitude toward English and English learning our college students have. We analyzed answers of questionnaires on English and English learning which freshmen of this college answered at the beginning of the school year in 2002 and 2005. We compare questionnaires of our college students and those of other high schools all around Japan that were conducted in 1988. The result shows some characteristic tendencies on the above‐mentioned respects, compared with the pilot research in 1988. We would also like to propose some ideas to motivate students to learn English.
