Strategic Use of Discourse Markers

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that discourse markers are frequently used strategically for facilitating communication. What speakers can do by using discourse markers are as follows. Speakers can communicate their intentions or attitudes of utterances effectively, that the relationship between speakers and listeners into consideration and save listeners' face, and take the initiative of the conversation to keep control of the flow of discourse. Discourse markers make a great contribution to achieve the main purpose of communication, that is, to succeed in social interaction.
