The smartphone ownership rate is increasing across generations. Over 97% of university students own smart phones, and nearly half of them use it for prolonged periods of time, depending on their addiction status. We firstly examined the personal and environmental factors that prompted prolonged use of, or dependency on, smartphones. The personal factors included gender, boredom, and communication orientation. Moreover, the environmental factors included recognition of smartphone usability, onset age of smartphone usage, and living environment. Secondly, our exploration of the advantages and disadvantages of university students’ smart phone usage revealed the following five categories of benefits: communication and interpersonal relationships, education and learning, information and communication, social skills, and mental satisfaction. The disadvantages included three categories, namely the effects on physical and mental health, sleep, and learning.
