The objective of this paper is to make an analysis of British Newspapers from 1865 to1866, viewpoint of the public knowledge in Britain about Japanese si tuation. There are a great number of articles in the British Newspapers about Japanese situation in the 1860s. It shows that the British stratum of society had a strong interest in the situation. In Japan, the hostilities between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Choshu Clan came out into the open in the 1860s. The Tokugawa Shogunate sent their troops to the Choshu territory twice, and in the end, the war broke out in 1866. One popular theory says that the French supported the Tokugawa Shogunate, while the Britain supported the Choshu Clan. The reason why the Britain stood by the Choshu Clan is generally explained that some British merchants exported weapons to them. However , this theory seems to be drawn a conclusion from only one aspect of the Britain. Therefore, it is necessary to make an analysis of various aspects in order to clarify the stance of the Britain. In this paper, the British stance is found from the perspectives of the British stratum of society, based on an analysis of British Newspapers.
