「人を殺してはいけない」ということの理由は何であろうか。この問いに答えるのは、それほど簡単ではない。何らかの理由を提示したとしても、その理由に対しては更にまた「なぜ」と問うことができるし、そうすれば、結局は、確実な根拠など存在しえないことが明らかになるのである。しかしそうは言っても、「人を殺してはいけない」という道徳規則を多くの人は常日頃守っている。実際には殺さないでいる。それはなぜか。少なくとも、二つの理由があると思われる。一つには、人間は他者の苦しみに無関心ではいられない、ということである。殺人者もまた自分が相手に与える苦しみを共有せざるをえないのであり、それは殺人者にとっても望ましくないことなのである。もう一つの理由は、殺人は自らのアイデンティティを破壊する恐れがある、ということである。道徳は人間のアイデンティティを構成する重要な要素であり、その道徳を破るということ、しかも「殺人」という「取り返しのつかない罪」を犯すことは、アイデンティティの「取り返しのつかない破壊」を招きうるのである。さて、このような「殺さない理由」は、はたして対人間にしか当てはまらないことなのだろうか。私は決してそうではないと考える。それはまた同時に、対動物に関しても妥当しうるものである。そうであるにもかかわらず、人間と動物の扱いに根本的な差異を設けるとするならば、それはまったく一貫性を欠いたことなのである。 : Why must we not kill humans? This question is not so easily answered. The normal answer is like this : if you were killed, you would be intolerable and so you must not kill other humans. But those who dare to ask, why must we not kill humans, question this answer itself. Namely their question is why must we not kill humans, even if I am not willing to be killed?. This question is the one about morality itself : why be moral. But this question turns out to be almost impossible to answer. However we mostly observe the rule must not kill humans. Most of us don't kill other humans. Why is this? There seems to be at least two reasons. One reason is that man cannot be indifferent to other's suffering. Murderer gives the victims much suffering. But the murderer also share the suffer he gives and it is of course undesirable to him. Another reason is that killing humans is breaking murderer's identity. Morality is indispensable constituent of identity. Therefore breaking moral rules, what is worse, committing a murder that is an unrecoverable sin results in unrecoverable destruction of identity. By the way, are these reasons of not killing humans only applicable to killing hu-mans? I don't think so. These reasons are applicable to killing animals too. In spite of this, drawing distinction between killing humans and killing animals is totally in-consistent.
